Just finished watching "the social network". Totally enjoyed it, especially the scene in which Zuckerberg walked out from the classroom while the professor was in the middle of explaining MMU tablewalk on whiteboard. For the record, MMU is a big part of my work, so that part of the movie makes me proud. Having graduated from Carnegie Mellon, i had seen handful of CS geeks/nerds that bear resemblance to the way Zuckerberg acted in the movie, for example the way he insinuated his then girlfriend, by saying that she didn't have to study on the fact that she went to the less prestigious Boston Univesity. Frankly many of the (cmu) CS majors think very highly of themselves too. It's not a bad thing per se. I guess it takes certain level of cockiness to be a game changer. Think about Apple's Steve Jobs, Oracle's Larry Ellison, or perhaps our group VP? Zuckerberg definitely looks like a douchebag in this movie.

A day after i finished the movie I read on the article about Mark Zuckerberg on Time Magazine. He is the Person of the Year 2010. Much contrary to what we see in the movie which is pretty much exaggerated, Zuckerberg is said to be friendly and well-received. All in all the article says lots of good stuff about him, his work, his modest lifestyle, his motivation and vision, and most importantly his pledge to donate portion of his fortune. So what do you think about him now? Good guy or asshole? oh ya, trivia on why the blue and white color of FB Logo? Because Zuckerberg is color-blind.

Speaking of arrogant douchebag leaders at work, i think i have ranted enough about our VP at work. With Nvidia Tegra and Qualcomm Snapdragon snapping tons of design wins, our group is currently under tremendous pressure to deliver. Our VP is again finger-pointing and belittling the efforts that the group has put in all these years, while the fact is that the messed-up management under him is largely to be blamed for our group performance. For the uninitiated, our SC group consists of mainly young engineers with average 5-year design experience, absolutely NO system architect, almost non-existence verification experts, and sub-par performance analysis team. How do you expect us to compete with the world class design team in ARM, Qualcomm and Nvidia? I had interned at Qualcomm verification team, and i can say the verification in our group is a joke. Don't tell me this is not a management mishap?

We have come to a point where we as engineer, don't know what we can do to proceed/to improve. We are waiting for guidance and help from the upper management but in return we get yelling and scolding, in addition to expectation to deliver. I personally think that our CPU has lost the competition in application processor market. The group is falling apart now. The morale is low and people are fleeing this sinking ship. A senior designer left last month, and one of the few remaining verification guys is going away in 2 weeks. My boss has already told us that he is looking for opportunity else where. Quite frankly it's already a miracle that our group has made it this far. Will i be in time to witness this group disintegrates before i leave the company? Regardless it's about time for me to update resume.
