So much hooha about switching back from English to Malay for Math and Science subjects. All the political reasons aside, one of the argument goes like English is the universal language for science and therefore it shouldn't be changed. Totally agreed. I certainly think English is the better way to go but personally I don't think language matters that much in mastering those 2 subjects. Already out of school when English was proposed to be the medium, I learned both subjects in Malay. Having said that, my math and science knowledge were (past tense used here) pretty good. I didn't encounter too much difficulty when doing them in English at university level. Look at China, pretty sure they are using chinese in technical subjects and the truth is my chinese friends, although a little broken in speaking english, are all very competent in math and science.
Of course, another main concern here is that, when english usage is reduced in school, naturally the standard will drop which I wholly concur. Because english was used so little back in my high school, after graduation, my spoken/written english were pretty bad. I struggled a lot to bring it up to standard. To go through the SAT verbal exam was a rather painful experience but think of it now, because of the test I was forced to polish my english to a whole new level. There's really no short cut in mastering a language, be it english, chinese, malay or japanese. I don't think by purely teaching Math and Science in English, our nation english standard can be improved by leaps and bounces. Something fundamental need to be done, either by increasing the time allocated for english subject or maybe replacing Pendidikan Moral with more English classes?:)
