Watched Superbowl XLIV between Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints last sunday at a friend place. Filed my 2009 taxes. Got 1200 refund from federal but I need to pay 200+ back to CA state. Tax calculation is always a mystery to me. All I do is to key in bunch of numbers into TurboTax software and hope the refund amount magically turns positive. Good news is that, apart from ESPP, I actually made some 5k from side trading in 2009, which is not bad at all. Short-term gain however incurs high tax rate, I have some capital losses carried over from 2008 to slightly offset the amount of tax I need to pay. Hmm, maybe I should open an foreign trading account in Malaysia to save on taxes.
