YP father passed away just last week. As usual I paid my respect at her father wake, but my action was frown upon by my mum and wife due to some pantang. My wife asked if it was absolutely needed for me to do the deed on behalf of team and company. I cannot say it is a must but given the fact that YP trusted and treated me as her superior with utmost responsiblity by progressively updating me with her father condition and estimated time to back at work, I felt it is only right that I show the same magnitude of respect, on personal capacity as well as on behalf of LM. In fact, I did the same thing for all LM teammates if they have close family passed away.
I am in a managerial position for almost 7 years. Slowly I realize the difference between a manager and a leader. I took comfort when a colleague actually mentioned that as long as I am in LM, she will be in LM. I got compliment from others that I did a good job at holding the Penang team. Even happier, I manage to turn around a stubborn teammember and align his work attitude with mine.
And all above I believe is the result of my consistency in action, and this includes showing caring attitude when they are in difficult situation, despite it may goes against pantang rule in YP case.
I particularly like this video, which explains the gist of leadership with simple analogy. These days I cant say I am still any good at technical, but hopefully I can say I did a decent job as good manager/leader, and hopefully that applies to both at work and at home.
